FROM THE ROAD

Doors and Windows (New CD)

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 12:00:00 AM

Hey Everyone:  Our new album Doors and Windows hits the streets today. We are so thrilled!

A little background for you: as I'm sure you know our band has undergone a few changes in the last year. We have a new member, last November we signed with Compass Records in Nashville, and already, a new CD. Crazy!

We decided to do the record about two weeks after I joined the band, and had less than a month to prepare before going into the studio. (Sometimes being put on the spot can give you a unique sort of inspiration; slightly frantic, but very motivating in a good way.) We rented a house way up in the mountains of Nederland CO, and set in total seclusion we hid ourselves away for seven days together to create material. We spent that week writing, arranging, arguing, pushing each other into new channels of musical expression.

While we were there the most intense wind storms I've ever felt shook the house like it was going to be whipped off the mountainside. It was also election week, and we celebrated along with the rest of the world, overwhelmed with joy. It was a great time. A short tour ensued, then it was time to be in the studio. So we headed to Nashville. We arrived and got settled into to the Scarrett-Bennett Center, where we stayed through the recording. Right across the street from the studio, it looks like an old castle/school dormitory. A little creepy at night, but very accommodating.

The crew at Compass was amazing, we felt at home from the start. The first tune we recorded was Don't Let Me Down, a favorite of ours from the Beatles. Our producer Garry West really helped us bring together all of our ideas in the studio and each tune was brought to life as we let go of ourselves and got into the flow. The world outside did not exist for the next nine days (except for going to 6am Bikram yoga classes.) Having a skilled engineer, a killer studio, a great producer, and an atmosphere of pure creative energy was what made this whole thing happen. We had a wonderful time making this album, and emerged feeling rejuvenated and confident that we had given it our collective best. Albums are stepping stones, each one leading to the other. We are very proud of this one and can't wait to bring you more in the future.
